We launched Isilon OneFS 8.0 (code named “Riptide”) here and the bits are now out! That 8.0 release was big (north of 21M lines of new code, 12M lines deleted – and that’s before low-level kernel improvements, which are north of 17M lines of new code).
Isilon OneFS 8.0 has huge new features for the datacenter core, the cloud (Cloud Pools), and the enterprise edge – with Isilon SD Edge, which is Isilon SDS.
Reminder, Isilon SD Edge is the same 8.0 code as the big bad boy itself (exact same features) – but can be deployed on anything (maximum of 36TB clusters – bigger than that and frankly you’re better off just getting an appliance).
Sidebar: wondering, dear VCE focused readers, how Isilon 8.0 fits into our converged platform portfolio? Simple. For customers who want Isilon integrated with their Vblocks, VxRack systems in the enterprise, we can use an Isilon Tech Extension along with Vscale (a datacenter fabric) to link your workloads with the industries best scale-out NAS platforms.
Now, I saw yesterday that the the Isilon SD Edge bits are now available for download here – download, use, have fun!
You’ve got to love this new EMC – everything is freely and frictionlessly available. No $$. No registration. No sales person will call you. If you like it, buy it.
Prove that our open posture is the right one. Download, try, use – and we want your feedback!
I LOVE the Free and Frictionless movement, bring it to everything!
I just finished up installing and experimenting with IsilonSD Edge; from purchasing and deploying Isilon at multiple companies, I hope this version is a foundation to the future it could be, if so I'm looking forward to the next version. I documented my experience installing and using it, as well as some thoughts:
