As part of the “Summer Gift” series (cool things that don’t cost a penny), here’s the next one! BTW - you can see earlier ones here:
- Summer Gift Part 1 – Project Mercury Beta Open!
- CLOSED- Summer Gift Part 2 – 10 VNXe arrays free to play with for volunteers!
- Summer Gift Part 3 – XtremIO vCOPS integration
- Summer Gift Part 4 – Backup Automation APIs
This new one is about vLab – which keeps adding new goodies!
vLab is an enormous scale “Lab as a Service” with a self-service portal (http://portal.demoemc.com). It’s widely used by EMC SEs, and some EMC Partners. For customers, I’m advocating that you talk to your SEs, and ask for labs of the products/solutions you are considering.
It runs at large global scale, runs on “what we preach”:
- a Hybrid Cloud – mostly on prem, but starting to use more public with vCHS
- IaaS using the vCloud Suite
- Runs on converged infrastructure designs (multiple design points, but a lot of Vblock)
- Using all sorts of elements in the M&O stack (including an alphabet soup of stuff in Pivotal – like Redis, TCserver, stuff in node.js, and RabbitMQ all over the place)
To give you an idea of scale, Jun saw a total of 8,850 labs provisioned (containing a ton of VMs each) which is a 12% increase year over year, and a 19% increase over June 2013. Our Q2 completed with a record-breaking 28,932 labs which is a 25% increase over Q2’13.
Vlab also supported 2,300 sessions completed at 37 events globally including numerous HOL Customer events in the US, Channel and Minors Enablement Training in EMEA and Storage Management Operation Innovation events in APJ.
Note: vLab is almost always running at capacity all the time (as we add more capacity, the demand just increases to match), so make sure to schedule your lab in advance of need (though you can always try “on demand”) and if a provisioning request fails – it’s usually due to peak demand, try again.
In the month of June, vLab added these labs which people should check out!
