As part of the “Summer Gift” series (cool things that don’t cost a penny), here’s the next one! BTW - you can see earlier ones here:
- Summer Gift Part 1 – Project Mercury Beta Open!
- CLOSED- Summer Gift Part 2 – 10 VNXe arrays free to play with for volunteers!
- Summer Gift Part 3 – XtremIO vCOPS integration
This new one is about using APIs and powershell to automate and abstract everything in the EMC data protection and availability portfolio – very, very cool stuff! If you’re in the infrastructure business, you know you need to automate everything. That includes not only the “steady state” infrastructure, but the services around it (including backup in all of it’s forms).
Thank you to the always awesome Clint Kitson for all his hard work for the community at large!
- STEP 1: Start here - http://velemental.com/2014/07/02/hello-world-software-defined-protection-from-emc/
- This blog post creates the logical framing for what comes next (summarizing 2 years of work as we’ve continued to evolve, abstract, and automate data protection – partially as part of vCHS learning, but also at other customers).
- STEP 2: Read this - http://velemental.com/2014/07/03/emc-dpad-apis-and-protection-abstraction/
- This blog post frames up the logical constructs, and abstraction frameworks. Necessary to get the most out of Step 3…
- STEP 3: Read this – and start using the powershell module (102 commandlets) included - http://velemental.com/2014/07/07/powershell-module-for-emc-protection-rest-api/
- This blog post provides the necessary fundamental ingredients to automate almost anything involving EMC and vSphere backup.
- STEP 4: Read this - http://velemental.com/2014/07/08/powercli-module-for-vmware-vsphere-protection/
- This applies the tools from Step 3 to general purpose vSphere use cases – useful for just about everyone.
- STEP 5: Read this - http://velemental.com/2014/07/09/powercli-module-for-public-cloud-protection/
- This applies the tools from Step 4, adds another 104 powershell cmdlets (total of 206!) that are focused on true cloud, multi-tenant use cases.
