vLab is a wildly popular online, on demand, self-service environment where you can get all sorts of hands-on of complex IT solutions – whenever, wherever you want.
It’s powered by a whole pile of Vblocks and the vCloud management suite (in several environments around the world) – and you can access it here: http://portal.demoemc.com. IMO, it’s a technical tour de force (not perfect and always striving to improve) and one of the coolest parts of being an EMC SE or partner.
It’s huge. It can support tens of thousands of VMs – and some of them (the big arrays or application environments) are fat (and no, I don’t mean “phat”) – they are big memory and CPU consumers. So…
<public service announcement>
vLab will power the Hands-on and Guided Labs at EMC World this year. We anticipate a large turnout for the labs and expect the demand will require us to apply all of our available capacity from our new back-end system. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to lock the new system from general daily use during the event. We understand the inconvenience this may cause the field and are working to minimize the window of disruption to an absolute minimum.
At the same time, we need to balance the priority and visibility of EMC World to ensure the success of that event. The effective unavailability of these labs coincide with the days of EMC World with a little time prior to the show to bleed out running systems and free capacity.
Please note below the dates and list of labs that will be unavailable below…

Please alert anyone that might use these labs on those days that they will not have the capability to use these labs during this time period. No new reservations against the labs listed above will be possible after the system is locked on May 1. We will allow existing sessions to run through Saturday, May 3rd, when we will then end all active sessions of the above listed labs.
Timeline Details:
- The vLab Team will lock all labs listed above at 9 AM EST on Thursday, May 1, thus preventing new reservations of the above labs.
- No new reservations will be possible until 1 PM EST Thursday, May 8.
- At 1 PM EST on the 8th, we will unlock those labs and new reservations against them will again be possible.
- Running labs scheduled to end by Saturday May 3rd will be allowed to end naturally on their scheduled expiration time.
- All running instances of the above labs will be ended on Saturday Evening, May 3rd, unless prior arrangements have been made.
- We will not process extensions for any of these labs during the service degradation window, please plan accordingly. Ask for a snapshot if needed.
- We will process snapshot requests for people who need to save their work through Friday, May 2nd.
- We ask that our users cooperatively end any labs running on the 1st that are not needed for critical activity.
We have explicitly listed the labs that will be locked and made invisible to vLab Portal. All remaining labs not listed here will still be available and are free to be used at all times (over 100 others)
