Folks – if you don’t subscribe to velemental, I would highly recommend it. It’s the blog of the one and only Clint Kitson.
Beyond being a great dude, and an incredible EMCer – he often gets applied to all sorts of funky projects. The stuff he whips up has a habit of turning into products/integration (like Nick Weaver) – a recent example being the EMC Storage Analytics integrated capability with vCenter Operations, so following him gives a peek into some of the things we might be working on :-)
He posted two last night:
- a HOWTO integrate EMC Avamar with vCOPS here
- a HOWTO integrate EMC Avamar with vCloud Director here (this is an update from the integration we’ve done in the past)
vCloud Director is still missing (in current releases) some of the APIs that could make backup/recovery of tenants, VMs, catalog items easier, but this is a space where all the backup vendors are tripping over themselves to solve a real customer problem. If you look at 2 above, you can see how EMC is solving it now (and is a hint at the work we’re doing with the VMware team to make true multi-tenant backup integration with vCloud director work better – not just for us, but for all). A suggestion when looking at backup of vCD – here’s what we think a really elegant solution (like we previewed as a prototype way back when with vCloud Protector at VMworld) would need to do/have to be a true “Cloud IaaS backup”:
- Protect Virtual Machines
- Protect and Recover All Aspects of Virtual Applications and Templates
- vCloud Director Hierachial Policy Driven Protection
- Tenant Self-Service Management of Backups and Restores
- Fully API Driven for Custom Portal Integration (everyone forgets this)
- Scale to Meet the Demands of Service Providers (not easy)
- potentially a vCloud Director Web Plugin
Still a ways to go, but great to see what we can do today for customers looking to do this! Thanks Clint!
