Every bit of time I learn and play with vFabric Data Director – the more I think it’s really, really cool.
As a reminder, vFabric Data Director “cloudifies” the world of databases:
- It makes elastic resource pools of all the resources database need (CPU, memory, storage)
- It makes each instance completely isolated. This has security and performance benefits. This isn’t like creating another view or logical instance (which all databases worth their salt can do), but fully isolated instance.
- It creates a multitenant model
- It makes self-service provisioning from templates simple and easy
- It makes creating test/dev copies and backup/restore self-service and easy
- It has a rich programmatic model.
Those are “cloud” attributes. With the currently shipping vFabric Data Director version, you can do this with vFabric Postgres. Very soon (as you can see in the demos), you can do it with Oracle. In upcoming versions, you can expect more, like SQL Server, SQLFire/GemFire, Greenplum DB and Greenplum Hadoop.
There is a long history of EMC and VMware collaboration around vFabric Data Director (both companies have been looking at how the world of databases is being disrupted by virtualization, massive multicore, cheap memory, flash, the NoSQL models, big data models, etc).
At EMC World – we worked together to show how we could improve:
- Backup/Restore – by integrating EMC Data Domain boost natively with vFabric Data Director – we can improve backup speed by 3x or more, and Data Domain is an ideal backup target (since vFabric Data Director creates backups to a datastore – you can use an NFS datastore exported by Data Domain and leverage killer inline dedupe)
- Ingesting/importing large databases – as vFabric Data Director moves beyond the vFabric Postgress use cases, people will want to import databases – in many cases they could be large.
You’ve got to love NAS – particularly when the NFS server properties (huge inline dedupe with Data Domain; huge scale-out streaming performance with Isilon) are so well matched to the use case needs.
Past the break – there are demos on youtube, and downloadable copies in MOV and MP4 format…
This first one is a demonstration of how VMware vFabric Data Director makes backup, restore, and test and development easy for DBAs using Oracle, vFabric Postgres and other database types. Going a step further, it shows how native integration with EMC Data Domain Boost accelerates backup, and couples with backup to disk with incredible performance and deduplication for incredible efficiency. This second is a demonstration of how VMware vFabric Data Director and EMC Isilon can be used together to accelerate the ingest of databases. vFabric Data Director can ingest/import databases from other sources, using database backups stored on NFS. Isilon is an ideal NFS server for this because of it's incredible streaming performance and scale-out architecture. This demonstration shows these two solutions working together. So there you have it. Not only did EMC collaborate with VMware in the development of vFabric Data Director, but here you can see how we are bringing our solutions together to make a case of 1+1=3.
What do you think?
