This is the physical layer “peer” to vCloud Director for customers using Vblocks. It is purpose-built orchestration software turns a Vblock into a service catalog-oriented elastic pool of Compute, Network and Storage that is designed to be consumed in private and public cloud use cases.
It’s a really good idea to watch a demo of this in action if you haven’t already – here’s what we demoed at VMworld San Francisco (live of course there, Youtube here :-).
We announced the beta of UIM (which was in full flight at the time) at VMworld in San Fran, and it’s GA here for VMworld Copenhagen about a month later.
If you want to read more on UIMv2.0 here.
The team is working furiously already on v2.1 and v3.0. Right now, UIM shouldn’t be viewed as “general purpose” orchestration software (think NewScale), but rather as “orchestration purpose built for Vblock”
One of the things that I think will prove really important over time:
UIM v2.0 also offers a rich integrated single API for a Vblock.
It’s very analagous to vCloud director (but obviously complementary – UIM orchestrates the physical infrastructure – making vSphere clusters/datastores which vCD can consume) – the vCloud API will be how MANY customers interact, leveraging their own portals and other orchestration tools.
There’s more info on this for people who are interested… read on….
