With VMworld 2010 - Copenhagen rapidly approaching (Oct 12th-14th), people are asking what should I expect to see from EMC?
Here’s the high level:
There are 13 EMC led or joint VMware/EMC or VCE sessions. There’s a table with more detail later, or you can download and print this handy guide:
What else? Glad you asked!
- EMC is a Global Diamond Sponsor, and we will have a large booth in the exhibitor hall #28
- Theater (customers sharing their experiences, minimzing vendor commercials)
- 8 workstations where people can learn more about specific use cases/technologiess.
- There will be a EMC Partner Pavilion, Booth #28A where some of our EMEA partners will be showing how they bring solutions to bear for our customers.
- We are replicating the incredibly popular EMC/VMware HoL we did for the first time at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco (read up on that here). It will be Booth #28B. This is a “nerd only” (in a good way) zone :-) No sales, no marketing. It’s where customers can play with the stuff all live, see how the vCenter plugins work, try our our virtual appliances, see VPLEX works, see VAAI in action, try our RSA integration, play with every EMC platform, including Data Domain.
- Glass video booth up front where customers can share their stories.
This is how it is laid out at the event:

Q: What EMC/VMware Sessions will there be?
A: Here are more details on each, and why I think they are worth attending.
ID | Title | Tues | Wed | Thurs 10/14 | Presenter | Why consider attending? |
SP9727 | Infrastructure Technologies Purpose Built for the Private Cloud | 11:00 AM | Chad Sakac, VP VMware Technology Alliance, EMC | This is the EMC supersession. If you want our “big picture”, and cool stuff, good one to hit. If you’re a customer, important. If you’re considering us, useful. If you’re a competitor, you’ll see what we are doing/saying.
SP9820 | Getting the Most Out of Your Storage Infrastructure with Client and Server Virtualization | 12:30 PM | Chad Sakac, VP VMware Technology Alliance, EMC | This one is practical, and has critical things we’re doing to help customers get the most from the least, whether it’s server virt, client virt, or public/private cloud use cases. More important reason – has BOATLOADS of secret embedded hints near the end of what’s coming.
BC8089 | Using VMware Site Recovery Manager with EMC Replication Technologies for Application Disaster Recovery | 1:30 PM | Steve Hegarty, Principal Solutions Engineer, EMC | Steve rocks – and works with a ton of customers of every shape and size from our Cork Solutions Center. This session covers Application DR – for several mission critical apps, not just VM-level DR.
EA7061 | Creating an Internal Oracle Database Cloud Using vSphere | Jeff Browning, Solutions Consultant Engineer, EMC | Not only does he know his stuff (does loads of solutions testing at a variety of scales – and has been doing it for years, including at NetApp and EMC)… Oracle has asked me to have Jeff fired on several occasions :-) ’Nuff said!
EA7726 | Virtual Machines Outperforming Physical Machines - Crossing the Performance Barrier | 1:30 PM | David Korsunsky, Sr. Manager, ISV Alliances, VMware, Inc. | Drummonds + Korsunsky. If you’re running heavy IO workloads on VMware – you’ve got to be there.
SP8195 | Managing Security Compliance for VMware Virtualization | 1:30 PM | Jim Wiese, Director of Virtualization Development, RSA Corporation | When you move into supporting mission-critical apps, you’ll be asked “how do I prove I have hardened my vSphere environment, and can I pass a PCI audit?” This session will help you answer those.
SP9646 | How VCE is changing the IT landscape with Vblock converged infrastructure. | 1:30 PM | VCE | This is the VCE supersession. VCE is leading the way on the integrated infrastructure world, but unlike others (ahem Exalogic) we think it’s all about VMware. Come and see what we’re doing, what the latest is, and the thinking going on in San Jose/Palo Alto/Hopkinton
SP9647 | Application Deployment, Considerations and Use Cases applied to VDI on Vblock | 9:00 AM | VCE | Very interesting topic – can you simplify View and other deployments, and if so how.
SP9821 | Backup with Deduplication: Accelerating the Journey to 100% Virtualization | 12:00 PM | Daniel Budiansky, Principal Technical Consultant & Enterprise Technologist, EMC | What we’re doing around backup in the VMware space – vStorage APIs for Data Protection, vCenter integration, dedupe and more
TA7171 | Performance Best Practices for vSphere | 2:00 PM | 3:00 PM | Scott Drummonds, Technical Director, vSpecialist, EMC | One of the most popular sessions from the Americas. Drummonds. ‘Nuff said.
TA7962 | Modern Networking in a Virtualized Environment | 1:30 PM | Nicholas Weaver, Senior vSpecialist, EMC | A great session from a great vSpecialists (no EMC nothing in this one – straight up networking info for VMware admins)
TA8051 | Infrastructure Technologies to Long Distance VMotion – What Is “VM Teleportation”? | 10:30 AM | Chad Sakac VP VMware Technology Alliance | Here we demonstrate VM Teleportation 1/3 of the way around the globe – live. Also includes critical do’s (and DON’Ts!!!) about deploying VMware and EMC VPLEX together. Includes our roadmap and what we’re working on next.
TA8133 | Best Practices to Increase Availability and Throughput for VMware | 12:00 PM | Chad Sakac, VP VMware Technology Alliance, EMC Vaughn Stewart, Virtualization Evangelist, NetApp | Opened this up to Vaughn (and others!) to make it multivendor. Discussion of the most important “must dos” regardless of storage vendor, and across protocols. |

Q: What will be the EMC swag?
A: There will be loads of EMC swag, but like everyone, iPads will be given away like candy. We’ll be giving them away at the rate of 1 every hour at the booth.
Q: I’m interested in joint EMC/VCE/RSA – can I get a job there?
A: YES – we will actively be recruiting.
Q: What’s the scoop on the parties?
A: There will be two that EMC is holding.
- The vGeekFest party (you can see more on the one in San Fran here). Location is still firming up on that, but will be Monday night. Yes, that’s before the main part of the show starts, but the party is mostly for VMware, EMC, Cisco and VCE partners (but not exclusive!)
- Customer Appreciation Event (Tuesday night)
- Approximately 300 attendees including EMC, VMware, and partners
- Tuesday evening
- 19:00 – 21:00
- At the Marriott close to convention center
Looking forward to seeing you all there!!!!
