A great webcast on – a lot of fun. THANK YOU to Cody Bunch and Damian Karlson at ProfessionalVMware for hosting the #brownbag – guys, thank you for inviting me!
Vaughn (in the NetApp corner!) and I (in the EMC corner!) went back and forth for 30 minutes longer than the scheduled 60… These are fun, and I’d be happy to do it – anytime, anyplace. We covered state of the art on integration, stretched clustering, storage models, what we want more from VMware, futures, what each company needs to continue to do from a business standpoint, speculation on M&A (baseless speculation), storage startups (really good listening to anyone thinking about joining a startup IMO), and what 2012 has in store…
There were also questions people asked in their own blogs we didn’t get a chance to get to – you can see a doozy around Vblock/Flexpod, PCIe Flash/SSD, commoditization by VMware via things like the VSA and vSphere Replication and the latest on VAAI reclaim… (and my answers) here: http://virtualistmanifesto.com/2011/12/06/storage-smackdown-brownbag-127-a-call-for-questions/
Vaughn and I are friends, so we always try to be respectful and polite – but after some tweet goading (“what’s the thing the other guy said in the last 30 minutes you thought to yourself ‘bulls@#t!"’” – I’m talking to you Keith!) it started to heat up :-)
A funny story for what it’s worth – I’m CRAZY embroiled in 2012 planning (stay tuned – it’s going to be AWESOME) – but by it’s nature, it’s deep in org charts, budgets, strategic goal setting, creating “manifestos” for organization guidance etc. I’ve been in it for the last few month up to my elbows (hence a little slowdown in the nerdy blog posts :-). A bit of “behind the scenes” here was I just finished a brutal day – and mixing it up nerd to nerd was the perfect antidote :-)
