There's one more dimension here -- vihostupdate via COS or vihostupdate via the vSphere vCLI.

If you're using ESXi in *diskless* mode, the vCLI-based vihostupdate has some bugs and you should use VUM until these are worked out. If you've used ESXi installable (i.e. you have a local disk) either will work fine.

Also, the COS-based vihostupdate for ESX works fine.
